Revolting: Dreadful pleasures
19/04/10 || Daemonomania
Hearing that Rogga is in a new death metal band is about as shocking as hearing that Pamela Anderson’s knockers re-deinflated after contracting syphilAIDS. The dude is on a one man mission to break some sort of world record currently held by Dan Swanö. What is always nice to hear is that Big R’s newest (?) project, Revolting, is pretty damn solid. Better than “Bolted to the cross”, not as good as “Murder death kill”. Somewhere between Ribspreader and Paganizer in terms of speed, if you didn’t catch the album references.
What “Dreadful pleasures” lacks in originality, it makes up for in 80’s horror references. Being a Razorback Records signee, they have access to a top notch art and lyric department. Razorback knows how to market their shit, as the Lord would say. Of course, you could also look at that same scenario and think, “hey, Razorback just uses hired guns to add guitars, vocals, and drums to their preconceived song ideas”. However, if you’re sitting around wondering about the lyrical authenticity of such bands as Acid Witch or Hooded Menace, well, it might not be a bad idea to make some friends.
Speaking of friends, I often refer to post-metal-sludge-dronecore stuff as not being beer metal or party metal or having pals who aren’t made out of feces and tree bark metal. Revolting, on the other hand, is perfect for those rare evenings when you gather your chums around a roaring fire with a few snifters of brandy. Those cronies will certainly nod their aged heads to such stompers as “Moonshine mutation”, “Brainwaves of death”, and “Dreadful pleasures”. It sounds like Sweden. It sounds like the 90’s. It sounds like death fucken metal. If you want some progressive shit go listen to the new supersideproject Lillyfall’s Deadchrist Lament starring Michael from Opeth, Suckjamz from Necrophagist, and Dino from Fear Factory. Yes, I made that band up. But they rule.
Also, huge word up to the lyricists for penning content based on the fantastic film Blood Diner. If you have not seen this wonderful movie, do yourself a favor. Let’s just say a lady gets her head shoved into a deep fryer, emerging with a giant cooked cornball between her shoulders. She runs around a bit until one of the main characters knocks her noggin off with a broomstick. Pretty sure she’s topless the whole time. Quality. So + .5 for that song’s content alone.
Plus my copy was signed by “Scarlett” Johansson himself. Which makes it far more awesome than your copy. In a distant future where retro Swedeath is more valuable than gold, my offspring will be incredibly wealthy. Arise, future robo-McAndrews, arise and destroy.
